Samsung heeft aan de vooravond van de IFA beurs in Berlijn een nieuwe reeks Windows 8 producten getoond. De zogenoemde Ativ reeks bestaat uit drie nieuwe tablets en een smartphone
De naam Ativ komt van het Latijnse 'Vita', wat 'leven' betekent. Tijdens de perspresentatie gaf Samsung aan dat de nieuwe producten ieders leven makkelijker kunnen maken en dat men daarom voor deze naam heeft gekozen. Wie door het marketingverhaal heen prikt, ziet vier bijzondere Windows 8 apparaten: de Ativ Smart PC, de Ativ Smart PC Pro, de Ativ Tab en ten slotte de Ativ S smartphone
Ativ Smart PC en Ativ Smart PC Pro
De Ativ Smart PC en Smart PC Pro zijn Intel-gebaseerde 11,6" Windows 8 tablets met docking functionaliteit, vergelijkbaar met de ASUS Tranformer tablets. Beide apparaten hebben een extra helder (400 nit) touchscreen dat geschikt is voor maximaal 10 vingers en worden geleverd met de S-Pen, de pen-functionaliteit die we ook kennen van Samsungs Galaxy Note 10.1 Android-tablet. De Smart PC variant is gebaseerd op Intels volgende generatie Atom-processor, terwijl de Smart PC Pro gebaseerd is op een Core i5 processor uit de Ivy Bridge generatie. Beide apparaten bieden mini-HDMI, een SD-kaart slot en USB 2.0. De Smart PC Pro biedt ook USB 3.0 functionaliteit. De krachtige Pro-versie zou tot 8 uur op een acculading moeten kunnen werken en bij de minder krachtige, op Atom gebaseerde versie is dat zelfs 13,5 uur.
De Samsung Ativ Smart PC is vanaf eind oktober in Nederland verkrijgbaar voor een verkoopadviesprijs vanaf € 849,-, incl. BTW. De Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro is vanaf eind oktober verkrijgbaar voor een verkoopadviesprijs van € 1299,-, incl. BTW.
Ativ Tab
De Ativ Tab is een Windows 8 RT tablet, gebaseerd op een ARM-processor. Samsung heeft nog niet bekend gemaakt welke ARM-chip gebruikt wordt. Wij hebben het vermoeden dat het zwijgen hierover is ingegeven door het feit dat de chip niet uit de eigen Exynos familie komt, aangezien Microsoft Windows 8 RT daarvoor nog niet heeft gevalideerd. De Ativ Tab heeft een 10,1" scherm, weegft 570 gram en is 8,9mm dik. Op dit vlak kan deze Windows 8 tablet dus prima de strijd aan met Apple iPad en de vele Android tablets.
Samsung heeft bekend gemaakt dat de accu een capaciteit heeft van 8200 mAh, maar hoe lang je daarmee kunt werken blijft vooralsnog onbekend. Windows 8 RT wordt door Microsoft gebundeld met Office 2013 RT, wat dus ook bij dit product het geval is. Ook deze tablet biedt USB en micro-HDMI, maar een keyboard dock is voor deze ARM-tablet helaas niet beschikbaar.
De Samsung Ativ Tab is vanaf het vierde kwartaal van 2012 in Nederland verkrijgbaar voor een verkoopadviesprijs van € 699,- incl. BTW.

Ativ S
Ten slotte is er de Ativ S, Samsungs eerste Windows 8 smartphone. De specificaties omvatten onder meer een 1,5 GHz dual-core ARM-processor, HSPA+42 functionaliteit en een 4,8" HD (1280x720) Super AMOLED scherm. Het toestel zou bij de launch van Windows Phone 8 vrijwel direct beschikbaar moeten komen en heeft een verkoopadviesprijs Van € 549,- incl. BTW.
