Met Windows 10 wil Microsoft het stigma van Internet Explorer de das om doen door een nieuwe browser te integreren: Edge, voorheen bekend als Project Spartan. Het bedrijf uit Redmond heeft inmiddels bevestigd dat de browser echter geen ondersteuning krijgt voor ActiveX, wat onder andere gebruikt wordt voor het eigen Silverlight-platform.
Microsoft wil anderen daarmee aanmoedigen om over te stappen op HTML5, waar inmiddels ook de benodigde beveiligingen voor mediaweergave te krijgen zijn. Desondanks blijft Silverlight ondersteund worden op Internet Explorer 11 en kan men ook nog steeds gebruikmaken van losse applicaties.

Microsoft continues to support Silverlight, and Silverlight out-of-browser apps can continue to use it. Silverlight will also continue to be supported in Internet Explorer 11, so sites continue to have Silverlight options in Windows 10. At the same time, we encourage companies that are using Silverlight for media to begin the transition to DASH/MSE/ CENC/EME based designs and to follow a single, DRM-interoperable encoding work flow enabled by CENC. This represents the most broadly interoperable solution across browsers, platforms, content and devices going forward."
