HTC heeft met zijn Vive-bril voor virtual-reality de categorie voor hardware en randapparatuur in de Gamescom Awards gewonnen. Daarnaast was Star Wars Battlefront, een actiegame van EA/DICE die in november uitkomt, de grote winnaar. In maar liefst vier categorieën, namelijk 'Best of Gamescom', 'Best Sony Playstation game', 'Best online multiplayer' en de publieksprijs 'Most Wanted Consumer', ging het spel er met de winst vandoor.
Daarnaast werd er voor het eerst een award voor het beste indie-spel uitgereikt. Die ging naar Cuphead, een spel van de studio MDHR. Nintendo viel drie keer in de prijzen, met Super Mario Maker als 'Best casual game' en 'Best Wii U game', en Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes als 'Best mobile game'.
De HTC Vive is het resultaat van een samenwerking tussen de smartphonefabrikant en Valve voor het maken van een SteamVR-bril. Gisteren publiceerden we een hands-on met de VR-bril, waarvan we de wat ons betreft meest veelbelovende demonstratie van virtual-reality tot nu toe kregen.
Gamescom wordt gehouden in Keulen en duurt nog tot en met zondag. In totaal worden er ruim 400.000 bezoekers verwacht. De beurs is uitverkocht, maar aan de deur worden nog wel middagtickets verkocht.
