Aan de vooravond van het Mobile World Congress 2016 heeft Alcatel een nieuwe reeks smartphones aangekondigd, waaronder het nieuwe topmodel Idol 4S. Deze 5,5” smartphone wordt door de fabrikant gebundeld met een VR-headset.
Naast nieuwe smartphones kondige Alcatel ook een merkvernieuwing aan. Er is een nieuw, frisser logo en de toestellen van de fabrikant luisteren niet langer naar de naam OneTouch.
Het nieuwe topmodel Idol 4S heeft een 5,5” QHD (1440x2560) AMOLED display en is opgebouwd rond de Qualcomm Snapdragon 652, een SoC met vier ARM Cortex A72 kernen op maximaal 1,8 GHz en vier ARM Cortex A53 kernen op maximaal 1,4 GHz die in een big.LITTLE configuratie werken. De GPU is een Adreno 510.
Het toestel heeft 3 GB en 32 GB opslag, die uitbreidbaar is via MicroSD. Net als bij voorloper Idol 3 zijn er twee speakers, boven en onder het scherm, waardoor je het toestel in twee richtingen kunt gebruiken om te bellen. Nieuw is dat de speakers ook naar achteren afstralen, zodat het geluid goed klinkt ongeacht of je de smartphone op de voor- of achterkant op een tafel legt. Voor de speakers heeft Alcatel opnieuw gewinkeld bij JBL.
De Idol 4 en Idol 4S hebben beiden stereo JBL-speakers aan boord.
De Idol 4S maakt gebruik van Android 6.0 Marshmellow. Dankzij de Qualcomm SoC wordt QuickCharge 3.0 ondersteund. De main camera heeft een resolutie van 16 Megapixel, de front camera biedt 8 Megapixel en heeft een flitser. Het toestel moet zo’n 450 euro gaat kosten en komt halverwege juni op de markt.
Voor wie dat bedrag iets te gortig vindt, komt Alcatel ook met de Idol 4, welke zo’n € 280 gaat kosten. Dit toestel heeft een 5,2” Full HD IPS scherm en een wat minder krachtig Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC, met acht Cortex A53 kernen, waarvan vier op maximaal 1,7 GHz en vier op maximaal 1,2 GHz. Deze chip heeft een Adreno 405 GPU. De Idol 4 heeft verder een wat minder krachtige accu en biedt slechts 16 GB opslagcapaciteit. De camera heeft 13 Megapixels.
