Sommige van Lenovo's nieuwe laptops gebruiken hun SSD-opslag standaard in een zogenaamde RAID-modus in plaats van AHCI. Op zich zou zoiets geen probleem zijn, maar de Chinese fabrikant vergrendelt vaak de BIOS van zijn apparaten. Aangezien Linux deze RAID-modus niet ondersteunt en je dus niet kan overschakelen naar AHCI, is het praktisch onmogelijk om Linux-distributies te installeren op de betreffende laptops (waaronder de Yoga 900).
Er is echter extra verontwaardiging opgetreden door een reactie van Lenovo op een gebruikersreview. Volgens de 'Product Expert' is er namelijk een Signature Edition van Windows 10 Home geïnstalleerd, en zou de blokkade onderdeel zijn van de overeenkomst met Microsoft.
Inmiddels is de PR-afdeling van Lenovo op het verhaal gesprongen om het één en ander recht te zetten. Volgens het bedrijf is de overstap naar RAID-modus gemaakt om de prestaties van de laptops te verbeteren. De gebruikte controller is echter (nog) niet compatibel met Linux, waardoor de opslag niet herkend wordt tijdens installatie. Er zijn volgens Lenovo echter ook andere 'geavanceerde mogelijkheden' van de Yoga-laptops die 'waarschijnlijk' niet gaan werken in de huidige Linux-distributies.
Lenovo beweert tot slot niet bewust installaties van Linux te blokkeren, en zijn best te doen om ondersteuning te geven.
