Review: iPhone 14, 14 Pro en 14 Pro Max. Een stap vooruit, of toch niet?

A16 Bionic

De Apple A15 in de iPhone 13 is geen trage processor. Als je naar onze benchmarks kijkt, zie je dat het toestel bovenaan in de grafieken staat. De 14 heeft deze chip in de variant die ook in de iPhone 13 Pro zit en vijf gpu-cores telt.

De A16 is erg snel.

De nieuwe A16 is een chip die gebakken wordt op een 4nm-proces bij TSMC. Deze chip heeft zes cores, wat weinig lijkt in vergelijking met de chips van Mediatek en Qualcomm, die er vaak twee meer tellen. Apple heeft ook gekozen voor een big.little-opzet, met twee krachtige grote cores en vier efficiënte kleinere.

De nieuwe processor moet volgens Apple over vijftig procent meer geheugenbandbreedte beschikken. Dit zou onder andere ten goede moeten komen aan de gpu. Hiermee zouden games en andere toepassingen nog vlotter moeten draaien. Dit is te danken aan de overstap van Lpddr4x bij de A15 naar Lpddr5x bij de A16. Alle varianten hebben slechts 6GB werkgeheugen. Verder is de display-engine vernieuwd, onder andere om het scherm op 1Hz aan te kunnen sturen.

De telefoon biedt compatibiliteit met Wi-Fi 6 en 5G. Alle nieuwe 14’s hebben Bluetooth 5.3 aan boord en dat geldt dus ook voor modellen met de A15-chip. Bijzonder is de mogelijkheid om in noodgevallen satellietcommunicatie te kunnen gebruiken om een tekstbericht te versturen. Die optie is alleen aanwezig op de modellen in de 14-reeks en vooralsnog alleen in de Verenigde Staten en Canada beschikbaar.

De telefoons hebben ook ongevaldetectie aan boord en kunnen in geval van een harde botsing of val zelf hulpdiensten waarschuwen.

Het feit dat Apple iOS biedt en hier behoorlijke restricties op loslaat, betekent dat niet alle benchmarks die we gewoonlijk draaien ook op deze nieuwe telefoons kunnen worden uitgevoerd. Om deze reden ontbreken in dit artikel de tests met PCMark for Android.

De laadtijd voor de telefoons is erg langzaam: het opladen van de 14 en 14 Pro kost net wat meer dan honderd minuten, de Pro Max heeft 136 minuten nodig. De werktijd op de accu is best goed. De 14 houdt het 15 uur vol, de 14 Pro, de Max maar liefst 16.
