Modellen
Via uitgelekte roadmaps is inmiddels ook al duidelijk welke Sandy Bridge modellen Intel rond de jaarwisseling op de markt wil gaan brengen. Het gaat hier zoals gezegd allemaal om modellen met de Socket 1155 processorvoet. Intel blijft vasthouden aan de Core i3, i5 en i7 serienamen. Aangezien men Sandy Bridge ziet als tweede generatie Core i-processors, krijgen de processors allen een modelnummer dat begint met een 2, bijvoorbeeld Core i5 2400. Achter het modelnummer wordt in veel gevallen ook een letter geplakt. De K kennen we al van de eerder dit jaar geïntroduceerde Core i7 875K en Core 5 655K: de toevoeging geeft aan dat de CPU een unlocked multiplier heeft. Ideaal dus voor overklokkers! De S-varianten zijn verder wat zuiniger qua energie - maar standaard ook wat lager geklokt - en de T-varianten zijn helemaal zuinig, 45W of minder.
Het verschil tussen de i7's, i5's en i3's is niet direct helemaal duidelijk. De i7 varianten hebben 4 cores, HyperThreading, turbo modus en 8 MB L3-cache. De i5's hebben, op het laagste 2390T model na, 4 cores zonder HyperThreading, turbo modus en 6 MB L3-cache. De Core i3's alsmede die vreemde Core i5 2390T hebben 2 cores, wel HyperThreading, geen turbo modus en 3 MB L3-cache. In onderstaande tabel zijn de specificaties van de te verwachten modellen overzichtelijk uiteengezet.
In de tabel zie je ook direct de varianten die voor notebooks op de markt gaan komen. Hier beperkt Intel zich in eerste instantie tot Core i7 en Core i5 modellen, waarbij het aantal cores - 4 of 2 - het belangrijkste verschil is.
